Hal and I have been married thirty-one years, and for about six months after our daughter moved out, we ate supper in front of the television and said almost nothing to each other. Not angry. Not unhappy. Just quiet. I bought the BestSelf Co. Deeper Talk deck in January 2026 because I wanted a reason to sit down at the round oak table in our kitchen and talk about something other than the schedule.
Ten months later I can tell you what worked and what did not. This is not the kind of article that claims a card deck saved my marriage. Our marriage was fine. We were just quiet. Here are ten reasons this particular deck got us talking again, and at the end I will tell you honestly what I would skip.
One question, two people, twenty minutes
The BestSelf Co. Deeper Talk deck is 170 cards split across six categories. We started with a single card on a Sunday night and never made it a bigger deal than that.

The first card we drew had nothing to do with logistics. It was about something Hal believed that most people around him did not. He sat with it a while, which is normal for him, and then said something I had not heard in thirty-one years of marriage. I will not quote the card, because the deck is better when you draw it cold. The point is that the question was not about us, so he could answer it.
Hal answers now without being asked twice
He is 60, he works maintenance at a hospital, and he does not enjoy anything that smells like a feelings exercise. The first two Sundays he flat out refused. The third Sunday he sat through it with his arms crossed. By about the sixth week he was answering on the first ask, and then he started drawing the next card himself. That change is the whole reason I am writing this. A deck only works if the quiet one decides to pick it up.
One card is enough for a Sunday night
We do not play for an hour. Sunday after supper, dishes done, usually around seven thirty, we draw one card and sometimes a second. Twenty minutes, maybe. The BestSelf Co. deck holds 170 cards and we have used roughly half of them in ten months, which tells you we are not rushing through it. A short habit you actually keep beats a long one you dread all week.
Six categories keep it from feeling like a survey
The deck is split into Courage, Beliefs, Life Lessons, Self-Awareness, Dreams, and Exposed. That matters more than it sounds. When you know a question could come from any one of those six places, you pay attention to the draw. It also lets us steer a little. On a week when Hal is worn down from the hospital we lean toward Dreams or Life Lessons. On a better night we let it land wherever it lands.
The kids and the bills stay off the table
For a year we talked about our son's job, our daughter's move and the water heater. Those are real things and they matter. But a schedule is not a conversation. The cards do not ask about any of it. They ask what you would do differently, what you are afraid of getting wrong, what you want the next ten years to look like. We needed somebody to change the subject, and neither of us was going to do it on our own.
You are allowed to skip a card
Some cards land heavy. There is one category we treat carefully, and if either of us says not that one tonight, we slide it to the bottom of the deck and draw again. That rule is not printed in the box. It is ours. I am telling you because a couple who thinks they have to answer everything will quit inside of three weeks. Skipping is the thing that keeps it going.
Two people can play it, and so can a crowd
The box lists two to ten players, and I believe it. Ours is a two-person habit at the kitchen table, but we carried it to my sister's at Thanksgiving and four of us went around the table with it after the dishes were done. It works because the questions do not require anybody to know anybody else well. My sister's husband answered two cards that night and stayed for a third, and he is not a talker either.
It fits in the wicker basket by the sideboard
All five of our boxes live in one wicker basket next to the kitchen table, and the BestSelf Co. deck is the smallest thing in it. It comes in a box, not a board, so it comes out fast and goes away fast. That sounds like nothing. But the reason we stopped doing things together for years is that everything took setup and cleanup. If a thing is four seconds of work we do it on a Tuesday. If it is four minutes we do it never.
It takes less planning than a night out
We tried planning our own date nights in the spring of 2026 and ran out of ideas by the third week. Restaurants cost money, they want a reservation, and by Friday neither of us wants to get dressed. A deck on the table is not a night out. It is better than the nothing we were doing. If you want a real evening out, scratch one off and go. If you want a Tuesday, this is the Tuesday version.
It gave us a reason to turn the television off
That is the plainest one, so I saved it for last. The television was not the problem. The television was the thing we did instead of talking. Now there is a small ritual. Dishes, lamp on, deck out. The room feels different when the set is dark and there is one card face down on the oak. Ten months in, Sunday is the night I look forward to, and I did not expect to be able to say that.
Hal refused for two Sundays, sat through the third with his arms crossed, and by week six he was the one drawing the next card.
What I'd Skip
Two things. First, our daughter handed us a cheap small-talk question deck in late 2025 and we used it up in a few weeks, because every question stayed on the surface. If a question costs you nothing to answer, it does not take you anywhere. Second, I looked at Let's Get Deep online and read the listing, but I have never owned it or played it, so I will not pretend to compare the two. I only know the BestSelf Co. deck gets used at our table.
What I would also skip is expecting a deck to fix something that is truly broken. Ours was not. We were quiet, not in trouble. If a couple cannot sit in the same room without an argument, 170 cards are not going to carry that, and I would not want somebody buying this thinking they will. Hal and I have never seen a counselor. I am not handing out therapy advice from a kitchen in Tyler.
Ten months in, we are still drawing cards
If your house got quiet and neither of you knows how to start it up again, this is the least dramatic way I know. One card. Sunday. Twenty minutes. Skip anything that lands wrong.
